Used To/Be Used To/Get Used To

Ці три конструкції часто викликають труднощі, особливо у недосвідчених  користувачів англійської мови. Used to використовується для розмови про звички. При цьому used to + infinitive. відноситься виключно до минулого часу,  а get used to + noun / -ing або be used to + noun / -ing можуть використовуватися в будь-якому часі. Щоб зрозуміти, в яких ситуаціях необхідно застосовувати кожну з конструкцій, розглянемо їх більш детально.

Used to правила

(Used to + Infinitive)

Used to + Infinitive використовується тільки для минулого часу і для тих повторюваних дій, звичок і станів, які зараз не є актуальними.

• She used to be overweight, but now she’s slim. – Раніше у неї була зайва вага, але зараз вона схудла.
• We used to live in Canada, but now we live in the US. –Раніше ми жили в Канаді, але зараз живемо у США.

Конструкція used to + infinitive може бути замінена звичайним Past Simple з тим самим значенням. Цю конструкцію можна використовувати, щоб зробити акцент на минулому, але в цілому вона має те ж саме значення, що і Past Simple.

• She used to work a lot before she had a child. = She worked a lot before she had a child. – Вона багато працювала перед тим як у неї з’явилась дитина.
• I used to work overtime before I left that job. = I worked overtime before I left that job. – Я працював позаурочно, доки не звільнився з тієї роботи.

Конструкцию used to + infinitive не можна використовувати для одноразових дій сталися в конкретний момент часу в минулому, в таких випадках потрібно використовувати тільки Past Simple.

• I used to see him only once. – I saw him only once. – Я бачив його тільки один раз.
• I used to go to Egypt last year. – I went to Egypt last year. – Я їздив в Єгипет минулого року.

Заперечні речення: didn’t use to

I didn’t use to like pizza before, but now I adore it. – Раніше мені не подобалась піцца, але зараз я її обожнюю.

Питальні речення: Did….use to…?

Did you use to travel a lot before you got married? – Ти багато подорожував до того як одружився?

Get used to / Be used to + noun/-ing

Ці дві конструкції дуже схожі, вони обидві використовуються для розмови про те, до чого ми звикли на момент розмови, але є все ж невелика відмінність. Конструкція get used to + noun / -ing застосовується до процесу звикання, а be used to + noun / -ing – до результату. Обидві ці конструкції використовуються, коли є момент адаптації до нової ситуації. Для розмови про звичних щоденних діях зазвичай використовується Present Simple.

Be used to + noun/-ing

Якщо ми звикли до нової ситуації і хочемо повідомити про це співрозмовника, потрібно використовувати be used to + noun / -ing. Конструкція може бути використана не тільки в теперішньому часі, але так само в минулому і майбутньому.

• I’ve lived in London for three years and I’m used to bad weather. – Я живу в Лондоні вже три роки і звик до поганої погоди.
• When I met Alan I was used to living alone and I didn’t want any flat mates. – Коли я познайомився з Аланом, я звик жити сам і не хотів ніяких сусідів по квартирі.
• I’m new in this town, but in a year I will be used to this place. – Я новенький в цьому місті, але через рік я звикну до цього міста.

Заперечені речення: am/is/are not use to…

He isn’t used to this noise so he can’t sleep.– Він не звик до такого шуму, тому не може заснути.

Питальні речення: am/is/are…use to?

Are you used to driving on the left? – Ти звик до лівосторонного руху?

Get used to + noun/-ing

Якщо звикання до нової ситуації потребувало від нас певних зусиль, або ми хочемо зробити акцент на процесі або тривалості звикання, то в цих випадках краще застосувати конструкцію get used to + noun / -ing. Так само, як і попередня, ця конструкція теж може бути застосована до цього, минулого і майбутнього часу.

• When I moved from my parents, first time I felt lonely. But now I got used to living alone. – Коли я переїхав від батьків, то спершу почував себе самотньо. Але зараз я звик жити сам.
• I don’t like Chinese food, but I’ll get used to it when I move to China. –Мені не подобається китайська їжа, але я звикну до неї, коли переїду в Китай.
• I didn’t like our new colleague from the first sight, and I’m still getting used to him. – Мені не сподобався новий колега з першого погляду, і я досі звикаю до нього.
